The Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS is available in a stylish black and silver. It boasts a massive 14.7 megapixels and has a 3.7 X optical zoom. Known as the PowerShot SD990 IS in the USA, the IXUS 980 allows major creativity with your picture taking as you can control manual settings including shutter speed, aperture and ISO.
These features were once only available on SLR cameras so it is a major stepping stone for the Canon point and shoot range. Canon has also introduced the new QuickShot mode which by using the viewfinder for framing and focusing shots, virtually eliminates shutter lag. The Ixus 980 features Canon’s new DIGIC 4 image processor which is the latest technology to reduce noise in images and make picture taking faster and easier than ever. The Ixus 980 also captures 30fps VGA video shooting with superb results. This camera is really impressive and perfect for someone looking to get creative with their photography.
Compression technology has been introduced to allow the 980 to store 40% more video than its predecessors on the same sized memory card with no reduction in the quality of the footage. Face detection technology is improved, which focuses and captures all the faces in the photo, making portraits and group shots turn out better than ever. If you’re someone who likes to capture moving images, you’ll be blown away with Canon’s Motion Detection Technology which locks in on moving objects and adjusts the ISO to prevent image blur.

I’m a DSLR user, but when portability is an issue I rather go with a point and shot compact camera. I have previously owned Sony compact cameras, but after purchasing this one I will probably stay with Canon.
It is loaded with features, very useful for an advanced amateur, but also for beginners. It’s like two cameras in one – using fully auto or almost fully manual settings.
It feels great in the hand, it has a great grip. It is light and durable. The controls are placed very good, almost everyone will be able to start using it out of the box without reading the manual. The auto mode gives surprisingly good results. The quality of the photos is impressive. Using high iso ratings will produce a lot of noise unlike the DSLR, but it’s not really noticeable up to ISO 400.
It has a contrast Correction feature which makes the photos even better. The video feature is decent also.
Overall, I’m very pleased with this camera, and my next point and shot will be a Canon again!
Pros:
high resolution, photo quality, ease of use
Cons:
price
This is amazing small camera, Canon’s top of the line compact camera. Not just it looks and feels great, it takes awesome photos. Even in the dark the quality remains more than good enough. Because of the high resolution sensor you can make excellent quality prints in any size.
It has some manual controls, not as many as a DSLR have, but you can produce pretty interesting shots by playing with these settings. I wish that it was just a bit faster, there is a small shutter lag and takes a good few seconds to recharge the flash. It is easy enough to use and overally I’m very satisfied with this camera
Pros:
great in every aspect
Cons:
it could be a bit cheaper
